What is Nutrition?
So, what is Nutrition? It is the whole process of taking in food to nourish the body. It involves:
- The consumption of food and drink.
- The breaking down of food and drink in the stomach, into nutrients.
- The absorption of these nutrients via the intestines.
- The distribution of the nutrients throughout the body via the bloodstream, where they are needed to fuel growth, support tissue repair and renewal, aid body movement and mental ability, and many other body functions.
Why is Nutrition important?
Nutrients are needed to maintain and sustain life, and without proper nutrition our health would suffer. We need to consume enough of the right foods, those containing the key nutrients we need for survival, just to maintain good health.
Food comprises various different types and concentrations of nutrients that determine how nutritious food is. The nutrients include protein, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins, minerals and water.
Without the necessary balance of these nutrients in our diet, our health would suffer. At the extreme, we could experience malnutrition, whereby we become more prone to disease, and various body functions start to deteriorate.
If you eat enough of the right foodstuffs in your diet, your body will get sufficient amounts of the nutrients that it needs to stay healthy.
